Why Prisons?

There are over 418,000 prisoners in India – far more than our prisons can hold in humane conditions.* Majority of them (67.6%) are under trials who wait for years on end for justice. Of the total prisoners, a little less than 5% are women. A  total  of 390 women  convicts  with  their 457 children  and 1,172 women  under trials  with  their 1,320 children were lodged in various prisons in the country at the end of 2014.

Prisons are certainly not the best of places. Within gloomy cells, inmates are weighed down by worry, guilt, fear, bitterness and anger. They are forgotten by the public. But most prisoners are worried about their families. Will their women wait for them and welcome them home after their jail term? Inmates may be victims of bullying and violence within prisons. Two hundred and fifty five clashes/group clashes were reported during the year 2014 in which 3 inmates were killed and 233 inmates were injured in such clashes.*

Frequently women ditch their husbands in prison and start anew with someone else. Worse still, these women get pushed into prostitution due to poverty. Children of prisoners often discontinue schooling due to poverty. They find their way into the world of petty crime. From there, it is a spiral downwards.

Divine Charitable Prison Ministries ventures into prison to meet inmates. We help with the process of correction with our words of encouragement and wisdom.Every reformed prisoner is an asset to the society.

We also meet with prisoners’ families, offering them assistance with their children’s education. Every child that is helped to complete his/her education and to earn his/her own livelihood is one less criminal the nation has to deal with.
